Cars work hard in Hemet. Summer heat is rough on batteries and A/C systems, and a lot of us drive long stretches to get to work. When something breaks, picking a shop from a search page and hoping for the best is a bad plan. These six checks take a few minutes and can save you hundreds of dollars.
Look up the state license
In California, anyone paid to repair cars has to be registered with the Bureau of Automotive Repair as an Automotive Repair Dealer. The number starts with ARD. You can look up any shop by name or number on the state's license search at search.dca.ca.gov. If a shop will not give you its number, call a different shop.
Get the price in writing first
California law gives you the right to a written estimate before work starts. The shop also needs your OK before it goes over that estimate. Read the estimate and ask what is included. If the price changes after the car is on the lift, a good shop calls you before it does anything else.
Ask to be shown the problem
A fair shop does not mind showing you the worn brake pad or the leaking hose. Ask to see the old part, or ask the mechanic to point out the problem on your car. If the answer is vague, or you feel rushed, get a second opinion. A second look costs far less than a repair you did not need.
Match the shop to the job
Some jobs are quick, like an oil change or a battery. Others need real diagnosis, like a check engine light or a noise nobody can find. Ask the shop if it handles your kind of problem before you drive over. Smog checks are a separate case. Most cars in Riverside County need one every two years, but not every repair shop is a smog station, so ask before you book.
Read reviews for your kind of job
A high star rating is a start. What matters more is whether people describe a job like yours. Look for reviews that name the work, like brakes or A/C, and notice whether the owner or mechanic is mentioned by name. Ten detailed reviews tell you more than a hundred that just say "great."
Compare shops before you call
You do not have to drive around town to compare. MechanicRank lists the auto repair shops and mobile mechanics in Hemet side by side, with phone numbers, hours, reviews and license numbers where the owner has given one. Nobody pays to be listed or to rank, so you can use it to build a short list in a few minutes.
